Use of various response tactics (i.e. the protocol to decide action) is an important aspect of adaptive behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated that neurons in posterior medial prefrontal cortex (pmPFC) of primates exhibit prominent activity modulation when the tactic of the forthcoming action was instructed. Yet it remains to be studied what role this area plays in the logical search of the appropriate tactic. To study this issue, we trained monkeys on an arm reaching task in which multiple cues required them to search for the valid tactic of the forthcoming response out of the four possible choices. Each cue reduced the number of possible choices of tactics by 1 to 3, requiring the animals to progressively narrow the search for the valid tactic. While the monkeys were performing this task, we recorded the neuronal activity in the pmPFC and the adjacent presupplementary and supplementary motor areas (pre-SMA and SMA, respectively). Neurons in the pmPFC exhibited either the tactic or action dependent activity during the performance of this task. Further, for a group of pmPFC neurons, the post-cue period activity varied in relation to the number of available tactics after the cue onset. These findings indicate that the pmPFC contributes to the search of the appropriate response tactics, and that this region takes part in the selection of tactics as well as actions.
