Gene expression is also regulated by microRNAs (miRs), which play a role in regulating
expression levels of mRNAs targeted. Recently, it has been suggested that dynamic of specific miRs participate in the development of diseases and is useful for diagnosis of diseases.
Previously, we demonstrated that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) increased
miR-132 and the increased miR-132 has a positive effect on upregulation of synaptic proteins in cortical neuronal cells (Numakawa et al 2011.Neurochem Int.), although function of glial miRs are not well-studied. Here, we examined effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), which is one of the growth factors, on expression of glial miRs using pure astroglial cultures. We observed that miRNA-134 was increased after bFGF application although other growth factors including BDNF and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor were not effective, implying that bFGF/miR systecontributes to glial function.
