It is necessary to develop and characterize animal models of depression for understanding of the pathological features of depression. In this study, we have developed and analyzed the mouse model of depression using the paradigm of chronic mild social defeat stress (CSDS) for ten consecutive days (Golden et al., 2011 Nat Protoc). After the ten days of CSDS paradigm, mice (B6) were housed individually for one month. Body weight and food intake of CSDS mice were significantly higher than those of control mice during the CSDS period, and these differences were sustained after the CSDS. Water consumption in CSDS mice was more than twice as much as control mice during the only period of CSDS. Furthermore, the CSDS mice showed social aversion to unfamiliar mice (ICR) in social interaction test and anxiety-like behavior in elevated-plus maze test just after the CSDS. However, this social aversion of CSDS mice was disappeared after one month from the CSDS. These results suggest that our CSDS mice may be a model for atypical depression, because the patients suffering from atypical depression have a good appetite and rise in body weight.
