Neuronal activities in the common marmoset performing Go-Nogo task using voice stimuli

In order to explore the vocal communication system in the common marmoset (C. jacchus), we try to record activities of neurons in various areas of the brain. Before the recording session, we trained two marmosets on Go-Nogo task using voice stimuli of marmoset obtained from marmosets (phee call, chatter call, squeal call, tsik call, and twitter call) and those of non-marmoset (dog and Japanese monkey). The marmoset was seated on a primate chair that equipped with a button, a shutter and a food plate facing a CRT display and two speakers. In the Go-Nogo task, a color cue was presented on the display as a start signal. After the delay period (1s - 2s), one of five kinds of marmoset's call for a Go signal or one of two kinds of non-marmoset's call for a Nogo signal was presented through two speakers for 1s. In go trials, if the marmoset pressed the button within 3 s after the presentation of a voice stimulus, the shutter slid down, and the marmoset could obtain a piece of dried sweet potato as a reward. In Nogo trials, the marmoset should restrain to press the button after the presentation of non-marmoset call. After 2 s delay following the non-marmoset's call, one of marmoset's call was presented for 1 s. If the marmoset pressed the button within 3 s after the presentation of the second voice stimulus of marmoset's call, the shutter slid down and the marmoset could obtain reward.
While the marmoset performed the task, multi-unit activities were recorded from implanted four tungsten electrodes. Using 5-channel wireless neural headstage system (TBSI, TBS.com), neuronal activities were transferred to the data-recording system (Spike2, CED). The data were analyzed off-line. The action potential waveforms were extracted by a template based spike sorting (Spike2, CED), and single unit activities were analyzed. We will present neuronal activities and discuss about characteristics of vocal communication system in marmosets.
