Parkinson's disease (PD) is a major neurodegenerative movement disorder, and various biological processes have been implicated in its pathogenesis, such as mitochondrial dysfunction, alpha-synuclein aggregation, impaired degradation systems (autophagy and ubiquitin proteasome system), neuroinflammation and degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra. Knowledge on molecular mechanisms that are related to PD is rapidly accumulating but needs to be organized efficiently, so that mechanisms of PD can be analyzed computationally and explored visually to grasp signatures of experimental data. Therefore, we have compiled the knowledge from 716 peer-review articles (as of Apr. 2014) on PD-related biological processes into a computationally tractable and freely available map1,2.
We are continuously enriching information of the PD map to maintain and update molecular mechanisms in the PD map. Because of the complex nature of diverse PD-related biological processes and ever growing knowledge base, a major challenge is to do curate information comprehensively and precisely with a limited number of researchers. Therefore, to embody a collaborative curation approach of the PD map, we organized a first curation workshop of PD in Switzerland last December3, and will host a second one in Luxembourg this October4 and future ones. We would highly welcome your comments, feedback and contribution to this collaborative curation effort.
