Light modulates energy metabolism through melanopsin

Light has a profound effect on our daily life. Recent studies indicated that aberrant light could disrupt the circadian rhythm and thus cause body weight gain in mice. However, artificial light in our environment seems to cause metabolic syndrome without changing the circadian clock. Whether light could directly affect the metabolism without shifting the circadian clock, or the participation of circadian rhythm is necessary still remains unclear. Moreover, intrinsically photosensitive retina ganglion cells (ipRGCs), a newly discovered cell type that expressed melanopsin mediated the light input to influence the non-image forming function. Furthermore, ipRGCs innervate the mid brain, which involve in the regulation of metabolism. Is it possible that light could directly affect energy metabolism through ipRGCs? To determine the influence of direct light input on body energy metabolism, we kept mice under different light dark condition, restricted their food anticipation and analyzed their metabolic phenotypes. We found that light signal could directly affect energy metabolism in mice, and the melanopsin light detection signaling pathway and ipRGC circuitry to SCN are both required. Our study suggests that environment light signal could affect our physiological function, and aberrant light may lead to metabolic disorder.
