This talk will focus on lessons learned from the information processing and learning mechanisms of the intermediate part of the cerebellum involved in the voluntary control of forelimb movements. Systematic mapping of the distribution of afferent input among the cerebellar cortical neurons and deep cerebellar nuclear neurons combined with in vivo whole cell recordings of their synaptic integration have been used to characterize the generic information processing and variety of learning mechanisms in this system. These mechanisms, and their potential implications for cerebellar function in general, will be discussed. In addition, at the global functional level of coordination control of the forelimb, which this system is involved in, another major lesson is that a large part of the cerebellar function depends on the functions already represented in the mossy fiber systems that provide the cerebellum with information. When this information is known, it is possible to provide a description of the functional contribution, in principle, of each individual synaptic connection. Examples of this functional view will be given and discussed.
