To turn left or right? A circuit motif for a two alternative behavioral choice in the zebrafish hindbrain

Animals collect sensory information from the world and use their brains to make adaptive choices about how to respond to it. Defining the neuronal networks for these behavioral choices at the cellular level from sensory input to motor output has proven difficult. Here we reveal a network for one of the most fundamental behavioral choices made by bilaterally symmetric animals: whether to respond to a visual, auditory, tactile or other sensory stimulus by moving to the left or to the right. We define the network connectivity for the lateralized escape behavior of zebrafish and then test the role of the key neurons by using laser ablation and behavioral studies. The structure of the network matches theoretically optimal networks for weighing sensory evidence to drive decision making. Repetitions of this network motif in a recently discovered hindbrain ground plan may lie at the foundation of other lateralized behavioral choices made by brains.
