We, neuroscientists, have worked independently in the world of science, separately from the world of industries. Our interest is to find mechanisms of how brain works, and that is hardly a shared interest with industries. However, it becomes more and more difficult to be totally independent because of a social pressure that we transfer our basic findings to technological applications. For example, some research grants explicitly indicate the final goal to be industrial applications. The difficulty here is how to incorporate two different goals together within our limited time of research. In this talk, using our studies on object representation in inferior temporal cortex as an example, I will present our approach to tackle this issue.
