Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is involved in pain perception and highly expressed in sensory neurons. TRPV1 is also present in the brain and has been implicated in L-dopa induced locomotion and dyskinesia, in the SN with a potential relationship to Parkinson’s disease (PD), in which the degeneration of dopamine neurons in the SN pars compacta (SNpc) plays a prominent causative role. Here we report that activation of TRPV1 prevents degeneration of dopamine neurons with behavioral recovery in animal models of Parkinson’s disease. Our results suggest that TRPV1 activation might be a novel therapeutic target and beneficial for the treatment of PD
