Reading habit is an important contributor to development of a wide range of verbal skills and knowledge as well as reading ability. Despite its importance on cognitive development, there is no research on the effect of reading habit on the development of white matter structure , which is the purpose of this study.
Here we examined cross-sectional correlations between the strength of reading habit and fractional anisotropy (FA) of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which is the indicator of white matter structural integrity among 121 boys and 132 girls (mean age = 11.6 ± 3.1 years) as well as correlations between the strength of reading habit and longitudinal changes of FA that occurred a few years later among 98 boys and 102 girls (mean age = 14.5 ± 3.0 years). We performed cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of the association between reading habit and children's cognitive functions measured by Wechsler IQ test. All subjects and their parent gave informed consent in the study, which was approved by the local ethical committee. Reading habit was assessed in the pre-experiment. Associations between reading habit and dependent variables were assessed using multiple regression analyses.
Image processing was performed with Statistical Parametric Mapping 8. Results revealed, the significant positive effects of reading habit on Verbal Comprehension Index score in the cross-sectional analysis as well as those on the changes of Verbal Comprehension Index score in the longitudinal analysis, consistent with previous studies.
Regions of interest analyses revealed strength of reading habit showed significant positive correlation with mean FA and FA changes of the left arcuate fasciculus (lAF), left posterior corona radiata (lPCA), and left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (lIFOF) in both of cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.
Our study newly showed the reading habit's importance in the development of the white matter tracts that have been supposed to play critical roles in reading (lPCR) and language functions (lAF and lFOF).
