The entrainment of heart rate to acoustic tempo

Many studies have revealed the influences of music on the autonomic nervous system (ANS). However, the precise characteristics of the musical effects and their physiological mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we focused on the heart rate, which is modulated by ANS, and investigated whether the entrainment of heart rate to acoustic tempo occurs.
Healthy people aged 20-39 years participated in this study. The participants listened to simple drum sounds in each five-minute session, and were asked to match their respiratory rates to the periodic image displayed on a screen. First, we measured the mean heart rate of each participant to determine the initial tempo of sound. Then we continuously increased the tempo of sound from initial tempo in small increments. The respiratory rate was controlled at 15, 20 cycles per minute (CPM) in the controlled respiration session. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) and an elastic chest band were used to measure the heart rate and the respiratory rate, respectively, throughout the experiments. The mean heart rate was calculated from the ECGs as indices of ANS activity.
The results showed that the mean heart rate increased when the participants listened to sound whose tempo increased in small increments. This increase in the mean heart rate seems to approach the acoustic tempo, suggesting the entrainment of the heart rate to acoustic tempo.
