Neurofeedback training is an operant conditioning through electroencephalogram(EEG) feedback. Several alpha-related NFT are proposed to be related to memory enhancement. However, previous studies show inconsistent results in memory performance. To further clarify alpha neurofeedback training on memory performance, spatio-temporal analysis of alpha rhythms over the brain was conducted. Fifty healthy subjects were randomly assigned into two groups (control group with feedback power of random frequency (n=25) and alpha group with feedback power of 8-12 Hz (n=25)). All participants received twelve sessions in three weeks, and each session contained six 6-min blocks. Episodic memory performance was assessed by picture recognition test. The alpha power was significantly elevated in alpha group exclusively. Episodic memory performance was also significantly enhanced in the alpha group. The distribution of increased alpha power primarily occurred in the frontal (51.7%) and parietal regions (33%). Increase of the frontal-parietal alpha powers was significantly positive correlated with improvement of episodic memory performance. Our findings suggest that the frontal-parietal alpha rhythm plays an important role in episodic memory.
