Face is important information for our social communication, because we obtain some social information (face-color, expression, gender, etc.) from face. Therefore, we tend to find faces unconsciously, even if in objects. Why do we feel face-likeness from not human face object? We investigated how face-likeness is processed in our brain using EEG and the properties of the face-related component of the ERP were explored through a face-like evaluation task using natural faces, car, bug, and Arcimboldo paintings presented upright or inverted. Event-related potential (ERP) studies have partly revealed mechanism of face processing. Previous ERP studies showed that the P1 component (early visual processing), the N170 component (face detection) and the N250 component (personal detection) of ERP reflect the neural processing of face. As to P1 and N170 modulation, inverted face was reported to enhance the amplitude and delay the latency of P1 and N170. To investigate how face-likeness is processed in our brain. The results showed that the significant correlation of inversion effect (FII) and face-like score was found in ERP component: P1 in both hemispheres and N170 in the right hemisphere, which suggested that the judgment of the face-likeness occurred in relatively earlier stage.
