Announcement of the call for
the 11th Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience, 2027

On April 19, 2016, Dr. Joseph Altman, who discovered neurogenesis in the adult mammalian brain and received the International Prize for Biology from His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, passed away. Dr. Shirley A. Bayer, Dr. Altman’s widow, who conducted research with him for many years, offered to donate to the Japan Neuroscience Society (JNS) with the goal of instituting an award in developmental neuroscience. Accordingly, after discussion in a JNS special committee, the Board of Directors of JNS, at the Board meeting on July 19, 2016, decided that JNS would establish and administer the Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience (hereinafter “the Award”).
We are now calling for the 11th Joseph Altman Award in Developmental Neuroscience, 2027.
Application submission site opens: November 1st, 2026
Application submission deadline: January 31st, 2027 at 23:59 (JST)
• Scope of the Award:
Research in developmental neuroscience at the tissue and cellular levels. The scope of the Award is not limited to phenomena during fetal or developmental stages; it also encompasses adult neurogenesis and its biological significance, as well as the changes resulting from aging and diseases. (As a general rule, applied studies are not included within the scope of the Award).
• Eligibility:
As a general rule, researchers who have received their doctorate or comparable academic degree within 20 years prior to the application submission deadline (Not limited to members of the Japan Neuroscience Society).
• Prize Money:
10,000 USD (Fixed total amount even if the Award is granted to joint recipients.)
• Selection Criteria:
Selection will be based on a total of three articles:
  • One article published within five years prior to the application deadline, on which the applicant is the corresponding author.
  • Two articles on which the applicant is either the first or corresponding author, regardless of the publication year.
Note: Unreviewed articles, preprints, and review papers are not eligible for evaluation. For accepted but unpublished papers, documentation proving acceptance (e.g., an email from the editor) must be attached to the application.
• How to Apply:
Applications shall be submitted through the Altman Award website:

  • One article published within five years prior to the application deadline, on which the applicant is the corresponding author (PDF).
  • Two other articles on which the applicant is either the first or corresponding author (PDFs).
  • Application Form, including a summary of scientific achievements (The form is available for download on the website).
• Obligation of the Recipient:
To deliver an award lecture at the Japan Neuroscience Society annual meeting held in the award year. (Economy-class airfare and accommodation fees during the meeting will be provided if the recipient is an overseas researcher traveling by air).
• Application Deadline:
Applications must be received by January 31st, 2027, 23:59 (JST).
• Method of Selection and Notification of the Result:
The Selection Committee will evaluate the applications to determine the recipient. Applicants will be notified of the selection results by the end of March 2027.
• Award Ceremony:
The Award recipient will be recognized at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Japan Neuroscience Society, held July 20th – 23rd, 2027.
